The Sheldon Mountain House sits on a granite nunatak rising above the Ruth Glacier at 5,700 feet — one of the most remote and demanding building sites in North America, accessible only by ski-equipped aircraft.
All materials were sling-loaded by helicopter or flown in on Super Cub aircraft, requiring the structural system to be designed in components small enough to pass through the cabin door of a Cessna 185.
The building is engineered for 200 mph wind gusts and sustained temperatures below -60°F. The mechanical system operates entirely off propane and solar, with a thermal mass floor that retains heat through multi-day storm cycles.
