The Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge sits at the intersection of tidewater glacier, coastal forest, and open ocean — a site of extraordinary ecological sensitivity that demanded a building strategy with near-zero ground disturbance.
Helical pier foundations allow the entire lodge complex to bear on a minimal number of point contacts with the earth, preserving the root systems and soil structure of the coastal spruce forest beneath.
The lodge operates as a net-zero energy facility: photovoltaic panels, micro-hydro generation from a nearby stream, and a wood gasification boiler provide all heat and power without connection to any utility grid.
