This 2024 Girdwood residence represents Z Architects' current design direction at full resolution — the accumulated knowledge of two decades of Alaskan residential practice compressed into a single building.
The structural system is exposed throughout: timber posts and beams express the force paths honestly, steel connections are left visible rather than concealed, and the concrete lower level shows its formwork marks rather than being clad.
Material selection followed a single rule: every exterior material must require zero maintenance for 25 years. Western red cedar (untreated, left to grey), cor-ten steel, and reinforced concrete fulfill that requirement without compromise.
