The Bears Interpretive Center at AWCC demanded a building strategy that minimized site disturbance within a sensitive riparian wildlife corridor — a requirement that drove the decision to use a boardwalk system elevated above the existing grade.
All structural members are pressure-treated timber with helical pier foundations, allowing the boardwalk and viewing platforms to be installed without grading, excavation, or impervious surface.
The covered viewing shelters are open on three sides to preserve sightlines to the bear enclosures while providing protection from Portage Valley's frequent rain and wind.
